The Confluence of Cultures

The Illinois Lewis & Clark Bicentennial Mobile Interpretative Center will carry the message of the Corps of Discovery across the state of Illinois and beyond. Its theme, The Confluence of Cultures, tells a story about cultural perspectives as expressed through various maps of the territory explored by Lewis & Clark. The Center's interior is a walk-through exploration of the maps and materials of these different cultures: American, African-American, English, French, Spanish, Asian, and Native American. They reveal the complexity of human perspectives as evidenced by each culture's prejudices, ambitions, and ignorance of each other and the vast territory their maps are attempting to portray.
